Purpose of /boot/map file in LILO

I read that the /boot/map file contains the precise locations of the kernel images. But in LILO you are already specifying the path of the kernel image with the image= line. Then what is the need for map=/boot/map line in LILO

"But in LILO you are already specifying the path of the kernel image with the image= line."

LILO uses the information in lilo.conf to build the map file. At boot LILO uses the information in the map file and never references lilo.conf.
