Public Servers
 

I have been talking with a couple of my professors who enjoy logging in generally by ssh or telnet to a public server. I didn't really get the name of any of their servers they use. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of servers like this.

A web search for "log into public server" or "access public server" will turn up a lot. A number of them are run by universities for their students and faculty, not necessarily for the general public.

At the risk of sounding like a smart aleck, I have to ask why you don't ask your professors for some suggestions? If they do this frequently, they probably know of some good candidates.

Well one of them is currently working at five different universities and communication has been difficult. The others are non-responsive to almost all email.

I'd have to say, that's a good reason. I wonder about their commitment to their students, but I'm from another time.

Have you checked with you school's IT Dept. to see if your school has one?

Right now I am in between university as my experiences at ITT have been less than desirable. My new school is ranked in the top fifty engineering schools with a major interest in mechatronics. I am still not finding anything on Google. I found one from MIT ,but they require you to be a student.

"free unix shell account" is closer to what I'd search for.

What is the use of this log on? What data or what resources do you wish to obtain? What is the us of these professor's when they log on?

It would be sort of rare in today's world that one could telnet to any internet IP address from outside a very good firewall. I'd assume they connect to some lan server that they may claim is public (public meaning the school).

Ssh is a more secure way to access some commandline or even gui server.

I finally contacted my professor who gave the url and helped me get setup on the server. It is a public development machine for any from enthusiasts to professors with doctrines.
Jefro ,as for the resources, the resources are of course software, modules, tools, chat boards, irc, mail servers, storage of data, and other things such as games. The server is a tool which allows me to connect to my data and resources any where in the world. Yes, I can telnet into it but it will only allow me the status of guest for this. I can however store a few GBs of data. Also, since it is a community server the reasons and uses for connecting are limitless. I thank you all for your help and suggestions.
