I've done some searches on this, I've got two systems, a 2000 model, and a 2004 model.
I've downloaded DVD option 3, small version. Not sure exactly, what contains what, the largest one is over 2.6GB or about that size.
I guess, if I extract the file as this page seems to recommend, and burn to a DVD.

It is easier to start the Linux Live DVD and extract the baseimage from the DVD. The base image is at /oldroot/cdrom/SRC/BASE-1.0.TGZ. The kernel is on the DVD at BOOT/VMLINUX.GZ.
To get the command line, you need to start xterm from the menu. Then you need to enter the command "su" to get root access.
I've extracted the file ps2linux_live_v3_pal_small_no_modchip now a disc image, 1.63GB.
So I think just send it to the DVD, and it should load..I already have the program running on a PS2 memory card.
