Ps dumps core in linux 2.4.22

Not sure if this is the right forum, so maybe someone can point me to the right place if I am putting this in the wrong spot.

I have a problem where I saw linux ps -aux crash and dump core with a call stack of

(no debugging symbols found)...Using host libthread_db
library "/lib/libthread_db.so.1".
Core was generated by `ps -aux'.
Program terminated with signal 11, Segmentation fault.
(no debugging symbols found)...#0 0x4001dff4 in stat2proc ()
from /lib/libproc.so.2.0.11
#0 0x4001dff4 in stat2proc () from /lib/libproc.so.2.0.11
#1 0x4001ecda in ps_readproc () from /lib/libproc.so.2.0.11

Did some searching on the internet and found some dead links that talked about this sort of thing, but could not get to the content of the links.

Thanks in advance,
Rob

Almost certainly you have a problem with one of your shared-libraries, specifically /lib/libproc ... and the question is why?

Did you update your system recently?

There is certainly a non-zero probability here that your system might have been inexpertly hacked.

Exactly when did this symptom first surface?
