proper action when fail to startup

I need to bring my hard disk (mobile rack) to and fro between 2 PCs. The Red Hat works find as it can auto-detect and re-configure the hardware, but I encountered some problem.

I remove the previous hardware setting and configure the new setting as usual. After restart, it stopped when 'starting sendmail' and just let the cursor blink and blink helplessly. What I had done was went to the shell under rescue mode, but I fail to do anything. When I typed'setup' at the prompt, it shown no tools.

Another typical problem is that it only let you login in command mode and the xwindow fail to start.

Anyone has experienced these problems and kindly tell me how to successful to startup normally? TIA.

Shell in rescue mode drops you into runlevel 1. This is a "bare" shell config (w/o starting up the usual daemons, look in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d for what's started, xdm will only start (std) in runlevel (rc)5(.d)) that let's you for example do fscking if there's corruption. It doesn't use the info in /root/.bash(rc,_profile, etc) so to get setup you probably have to key in the full path thingie.

If there's daemons in trouble, try to change the Start to Stop mode, boot up, and review your HW changes and the logs for errors.
