Programming Linux input devices, specifically tablets

I hope I've placed this in the right forum. I've been using my Linux distro for awhile but never bothered with any serious programming on it.

I'd appreciate if somebody could point me in the direction of tutorials or articles (preferably mortal friendly) with information on how Linux handles input from mice, keyboards and especially graphic tablets.

More specifically, I'm aiming at making a "control panel" for my tablet similar to the (rather awesome) mouse control panel GUI.

Thanks for all the input!
