Question Problems with Java

Before I get into my post I just want to address why it's posted here. I tried posting this into general but unfortunately I don't seem to have the ability to create threads there as a new user...

My problem concerns the Java applet in firefox. I've spent a good 4-5 hours searching for solutions and Ive had no luck, the few promising ideas I've come across have been way beyond my understanding and experience with Linux.

What I'm trying to do is record myself for work. When I go to the webpage I'm visiting it opens a java applet and then ListenUp opens from there. Everything goes fine until I actually hit the record button. Everytime I try recording the applet displays the message "applet halted".

I also get the following JavaSonics alert:

"ListenUp version V1.94 (build 443)
Caught: java.lang.SecurityException: access denied (javax.sound.sampled.AudioPermission record)
This is probably because you did not grant permission when the certificate appeared.
Please close all browser windows, restart the browser and try again.

System Details:
ListenUp version V1.94 (build 443)
java.version = 1.6.0_23
java.vendor = Sun Microsystems inc
applet not signed"

I'm never prompted with a certificate to accept and the test on ListenUp works fine. It just seems to be whenever I try recording elsewhere that the problem occurs.

First update your Java the version you have is ancient and has more security holes than swiss cheese. The current version of Java 6 is 1.6.32.

Second what distro are you using?

What version of Firefox?

Thanks for the quick reply.

I upgraded my java as you instructed and I am running Ubuntu 12.04 (newest release). Firefox lists my version as 12.0 and also says "Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu canonical - 1.0".

Also, after resolving some other unrelated issues in chrome I get the same error message when trying to record myself. So it appears to be independent of the browser and more about Java.

The only troubles I ever had with Java happened when I attempted to use it.
