Problems reformatting a USB HDD

I have a Maxtor 250gb HDD in an external enclosure (USB) that I'm trying to reformat.

I ran cfdisk /dev/sda to repartition it, and made 2 partitions (a 150gb and a 100gb partition). I then ran mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda1, and then tried mkfs.ext3 /dev/sda2. It said sda2 didn't exist or somesuch. I've tried unplugging and replugging the device in, but now it doesn't show up in /dev.

Did I do something wrong in the process? I need to get this sucker back up soon so I can run backups. :/

*edit* here is an excerpt from my logs while I was doing the reformatting..

Code:

Problem resolved. Rebooted, formatted sda2 before sda1 worked. Attempted to format sda1 first, didn't work. Running backups now.
