problem with xmms
Hello Everybody,
I am using RH9.0
I have XMMS on my system which is able to play the files of type "MP3, 128 kBits, 44.1 kHz, JStereo" and I could hear the sound properly.
The problem is, It could also play the files of type "MP3, 16 kBits, 16 kHz, Mono" but I could not hear any sound.
The XMMS related packages I have installed on my system are :
1. xmms-wma-1.0.3-1.1.fc1.fr
2. xmms-devel-1.2.10-11.1.0.rh9.rf
3. xmms-1.2.10-11.1.0.rh9.rf
4. xmms-alsa-1.2.10-1.1.fr
5. xmms-mp3-1.2.10-11.1.0.rh9.rf
6. alsa-lib-0.9.6-1.fr
7. balsa-2.0.6-1
8. gnome-alsamixer-0.9.6-2.fr
Can anybody please guide me as to which extra things need to be done in order to be able to play and hear all types of sound files?
Regards,
Girish

You need the plugin for this and the xmms-mpg123*.rpm download should get xmms to working.

Girish,
I tried your file(APURVAI.MP3) on my Redhat Enterprise Linux 4 system by double clicking on the file. It appear that it was trying to working as XMMS came up and seemed to be doing something, but it really did not play the file.
Then, I right clicked on the file and left clicked on "Open With". When I did this I noticed that XMMS was not an option. So, I slide over to "Open with Other Application" and left click on "Open with Other Application" and the "Open With" dialog box appeared. I left clicked on "Browse". then left clicked on "xmms", and finally left clicked on "Open". After doing this, the file played normally.
The file also played using the Xine multimedia player.
I hope this helps,
John

What distro you have? I know that you can even have the right plugins but for mp3's there is a place holder plugin that you will need to disable in your options. Red Hat/Fedora doesn't support mp3s on default due to legal reasons. Also check what your sound output is. Try ALSA or eSound or something different. Just a few things to try.
XMMS works great for me except I can't seem to stream aac radio. I have xmms-aac rpm installed but it still doesn't work. But then it could be the radio stations I'm trying to stream from, who knows.

Hello John,
First of all Thanks for your comprehensive reply.
XMMS on my system is playing all the files now after I upgraded 'alsa-lib'
from "alsa-lib-0.9.6-1.fr" to "alsa-lib-1.0.6-3". All other options are exactly same as they are on your system.
Lot of thanks to all of you.
Girish
