Problem with "Up2Date" program

I've been doing redhat up2date updates since I first installed redhat Linux 8 about 3 months ago. I have downloaded the "psyche" (RH v8) for free and installed it. I was able to register on the redhat site even though I did not pay redhat for the distribution, but did the free download.

Two updates ago, using the up2date program, I saw a program called simply enough "file." That was all it was called. I was suspicious so I did not down load it with the other updates.

The last update using up2date went well, and was quite large, including a kernal update. Once again there was an rpm called "file" but this time I decided that it was probably from the redhat site, and was okay to download.

Since then I have not been able to do any updates using up2date. It gives me the following error message:

"Error Message:
Demo service for server 1001938938 limited due to high load
Error Class Code: 51
Error Class Info:
Demo service currently disabled due to high load. If you would like
to see Red Hat's policies on Demo service, or find out how you can
purchase a subscription service and receive priority download access,
please go to http://rhn.redhat.com/preview/index.pxt"

My suspicion is that the rpm called file is to blame. I suspect that they could not prevent me from updating using the up2date utility, without putting something on my local drive. The error messages all read the same and it doesn't matter what time of the day or night I run up2date. I'm guessing that this is just a message now stored on my local drive that comes up whenever I try to use up2date as a non-paying subscriber. There are 9 updates currently pending, but there is no rpm called "file" this time. And again, I'm blocked from downloading and installing the updates.

Has anyone had similar problems? If so, does anyone know a fix for this?

Thank you,

sadmac

Thats a big negative on that my friend. I too was very suspicious on the package called 'file' but if you simply:

man file

you will see that 'file' is a very valid, and usefull, command.

As for your lack of being able to download new packages, well, join the club. Since the release of RedHat 9 I haven't been able to download anything either. There servers are just too backed up at the moment.

Thanks for the insight Crashed_Again. Yes there is a command called file but that's part of the OS or the shell. You might be correct, and I could be making all the wrong assumptions.

This would be the first time I've seen an up2date download that contained a Linux command executable rather than just RPM's (packages) as it always has in the past. The only thing that I can think of (not to preclude all of the things that others can think of) is the possibility that the command executable (if that's what it was) was downloaded along with the rpm's to ascertain file types within the packages. I've never seen this before but I wouldn't know that it has never happened. The file size of "file" seemed somewhat large for an executable command file, but maybe so.

I do hope that with the brand new release of RH 9 that there really is a busy server issue, but I still have my suspicions. Perhaps in a week or two if it really is a busy server issue, then I should be able to run the up2date utility successfully. Here's hoping.

Thanks again, sadmac

Most of the time, I can get updates through apt when the RedHat servers won't let me connect due to traffic. Check it out at... apt.freshrpms.net .

I would agree with ranger, if the up2date doesn't work due to high traffic loads, which by the way I am also getting, download apt-rpm then at a CLI use:

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

Works very nicely :)

Thank you Ranger_Nemo and JayCnrs! As I'm replying to your post I'm watching the apt update and upgrade running. WOW! Greatly appreciated.
