problem with .profile in SuSE 9.1

I put the following command in my .profile file:
PATH=$PATH:/home/ihandler/scripts

I forgot to export it and yet even then after I log in my PATH comes out like this:
/home/ihandler/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/opt/gnome/bin:
/opt/kde3/bin:/usr/lib/java/bin:/home/ihandler/scripts:/home/ihandler/scripts

Can anyone tell me how this happens? If I don't include the line then the /home/ihandler/scripts does not appear in my PATH at all.

Thanks -- Ivan
