I've been trying to print from my RH9 machine to a networked printer using the "print a test page" button built in to CUPS. When I print a test page, I get the error message "The connection was refused when attempting to contact chemp:631." Chemp is the hostname of the computer I'm trying to print from.

However, the URI for the printer, listed right above the "print a test page" on the CUPS admin page, reads:

Device URI: http://192.168.1.31:631/ipp/

This is the IP of the printer, but for some reason, it's trying to print to the local host.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

I did a little more experimentation with the printer, and it looks like it's just the "print a test page" button that is using the wrong destination. If I try to print from OpenOffice, I can see IPP packets go to the printer. The initial TCP handshake goes fine, but then the printer stops responding. My computer keeps sending a packet that looks like this:

at slowly increasing intervals. The printer (an HP Laserjet 8000 N) reports "86.0003 EIO1 ERROR" on its LCD, and won't respond to anything until I cycle the power. (The rest of the office loves this part.)

Any suggestions on how to proceed? No errors showing up in the CUPS log.
