Problem Updating Mozilla Firefox
I m using ubuntu 10.10. i have a preinstalled version on mozilla forefox in it. In the process of updating the firefox i have downloaded the file firefox-26.0.tar.bz2 but now i don't know what to do. How can i update the firefox.??

You don't. Ubuntu 10.10 is out of date and unsupported since April 2012, which means that you did not get any bugfixes and, more important, security updates for about 20 months now. Your system is wide open to any attacker out there.
Update your OS to a supported version, if you want to keep Ubuntu either go for 12.04 LTS (supported until 2017) or 13.10 (supported until July 2014).

i understand m using a outdated version. but now i have only this and i urgently need to update firefox what can i do now

Just extract the downloaded package (Ubuntu should have an archiving program pre-installed) and double-click on the firefox entry in the extracted directory.
Note that this will not replace the already installed Firefox, but run as an alternative install. Switching between those two versions often may give problems with configuration files.

Thanx for your message i tried a lot to update firefox in ubuntu 10.10 but failed. now i have downloaded google chrome and this is running properly
