problem loading linux

Hello, I have a problem loading linux , I had windows xp and linux on my computer and I wanted to add a new operating system so I redimensioned windows xp partition and I created a new partition in which I installed windows 2003 server, everything went fine, until I went to linux and it gave me an error KERNEL PANIC NO INIT FOUND TRY PASSING INIT TO KERNEL, So now I can't access linux ,I know the partition is there and my files and everything, I thing the problem is that because I added a new partition , linux is no longer hda5 now it's hda6 so on lilo.conf it must says hda5 and it can't access the partition , I think that's the problem, I now I can fix it by modifying lilo.conf and changing hda5 to hda6 , but since I can't access linux I don't know how to modify lilo.conf , I can enter on rescue mode with my linux cd ( I use mandrake 9.2) , but from the rescue mode I don't know what to do , I am new to linux so if you could please give me a step by step how to modify lilo.conf ,, thanks

Victor

I don't use LILO but I think there is a way to edit the boot options before booting the kernel. With GRUB that is easy as the directions are displayed on the boot menu. I suggest you read some LILO manual and check this out.
From the rescue mode, you reach a bash prompt. Mount the root partition using the mount command if it is not already mounted. (check for write access too). You may have to chroot the root partition. Check whether the root partition is mounted at /mnt/sysimage or whatever. Then chroot that to root (/). Edit the lilo.conf file using vi to correct the kernel and initrd lines. Run /sbin/lilo to reflect the new changes. Reboot.

Hi!

Open lilo.conf with the emacs editor:
emacs /etc/lilo.conf
Make your changes. To save press ctrl-x ctrl-s. To exit press ctrl-x ctrl-c. If you make a mistake you can exit without saving.

Run the bootloader install program:
/sbin/lilo

Need more help? Let me know!

Good luck!
Martin
