Problem installin software

I download files and save them to my /home/myname directory.Afterwards when i try to install them i get the message file not found even though the file is there. What should i do?is the another folder i should use to download files?
e.g Last time i downloaded mozillafirebird-0.7-i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz.
then i opened konsole and typed:tar zfx mozillafirebird-0.7-i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz
and this is what i get:
tar: mozillafirebird-0.7-i686-pc-linux-gnu.tar.gz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
can someone help me to deal with this?

I try to type cd Mozillafirebird and then type ./configure and that the result:
cd MozillaFirebird
eric@linux:~/MozillaFirebird> ./configure
bash: ./configure: No such file or directory
eric@linux:~/MozillaFirebird>

Any ideas about solving that?
