Have you taken a look at the file /etc/apt/sources.list? Here's mine from my Ubuntu laptop for comparison:

Code:
## deb cdrom:[Ubuntu 8.10 _Intrepid Ibex_ - Release i386 (20081030)]/ intrepid $
# See http://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes for how to upgrade to
# newer versions of the distribution.

deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick main restricted

## Major bug fix updates produced after the final release of the
## distribution.

Linux is pretty cool about explaining a lot of the errors you get. Just break it down piece by piece

The "E" tells you it's an error (Warnings have a... you guessed it, "W")

The "Type '"deb' is not known" part tells you what the system didn't understand (to it, this bit is gibberish)

The "line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list" part tells you it hit this bit of gibberish on the first line of the sources.list file located in the /etc/apt/ directory.

Post the first line or 2 from that file here and we should be able to tell you what to change to make it work.

If you are using Gnome, the default desktop, as you probably are:
  1. Go to Places-->Computer on the menu. From the icons, select the "File System" icon.
  2. Double-click on it and, in the new window, select the "apt" icon.
  3. Double-click on it and look around until you see the "sources.list" icon. Double-click on it or right click it and select "Open with text editor."
  4. When it opens, copy the contents and paste them into your LQ post.

If you do this as user and not with "sudo," you won't be able to make any changes to the file, so you don't have to worry about inadvertently changing the file.

There is a good intro to Linux at http://linux.about.com/od/linux101/a/desktop.htm. I'd recommend bookmarking it; being able to consult it will help you gain confidence.
