Unhappy Printing problems with Redhat 8.0

I'm using Redhat 8.0. I was trying to get the printer to work upstairs (WinMe). It worked once but not anymore.

I then tried to connect a local printer and it tells me that it has sent a test page to it, but nothing happens.

All of these did work, but now they will not. Does something need to be reconfigured?

Hi, here is your answer!

Here's the procedures to setup a network printer connected to windows:

1. Login as root.
2. Open a terminal window and type the command:

printtool

3. Click on New.
4. Once you see the Add a New Print Queue, select Forward
5. Then type a Queue Name and choose Windows Printer, select Forward after that.
6. Then under the Share name type the name of the computer and the name of the shared printer like this:

\\Nameofcomputer\sharedprinter

7. Under the user, type the username to logon to the windows machine:

username

8. Host IP, is the IP address of the windows machine
9. Password is the password of the user.
10. Workgroup is the workgroup of the windows network. Click Forward.
11. Then select the printer that you will be using, like the HP>>OfficeJetR45>>cdj1600,,,remember to select a driver. Click on Forward
12. Click on Apply.
13. Click on Apply again, and default.
14. The printer is now setup to your linux machine

Thanks. I'll give it a try. Will this work for a local printer as well? I can't get the local printer to work either.

No, to set up a local printer you do not go through the same process. What I told you was for a smb printer that's connected to a Windows box.

I tried what you told me. It says that it printed, but I get nothing out of the printer.

Make sure you restart the smb print queue and that you have a driver selected.

Ok, I'll give it a try. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I can't get the local printer to work either.

Hi Nelse,

I'm sorry that I couldn't be more helpful for you. It's just that my printer is networked. I haven't tried hooking up a local printer. I can't believe it should be that hard. I think you should be able to to just select it as a local printer as long as you have the right printer selected. Other than that, I wish I could help. Sorry, but good luck.

I'm going to try it again. I was thinking that maybe I should remove lpd and then reinstall it. Do you think it would work?

I tried your instructions again, this time word for word. I got the printer on the Windows machine to print! I found two problems with the way I had it set up. One was that on the Windows machine, I had the share name as HP 692C. I took the space between HP and 692C out. The other problem was that for share name I had HP 692C instead of \\DAD\HP692C.

After fixing these two things, it worked. Thanks for your help. I'm still having problems with the local printer, but I'm beginning to think it may be a cable problem.
