Printer Problems
hello, I am trying to install a local printer using Slackware 11.0, KDE 3.5.4 desktop, I looked around on that CUPS deal for awile, and couldn't figure that out so I tried the printer manager on the KDE menu and got somewhere, I have an HP DeskJet 722C (yes I know it's old, really old) and I have it all set up, but when I print something it says it was sucesful (sorry about spelling) but the printer does nothing, I am thinking it is either a problem with the printer itself (since it is so old) or a que problem, any help is appreciated.

Try accessing the cups web manager at http://localhost:631/admin
You should be able to see error messages associated with your printer jobs there. Additionally, you should also check the cups log files in /var/log. Specifically /var/log/cups/access_log and /var/log/cups/error_log are good ones to check. Try printing a page and then look at the job output in the web manager and also check for anything suspicious in the log files with the appropriate time stamp. Post your results here and we should be able to help you diagnose the problem. |
I used the CUPS manager on localhost:631/admin, and it didn't do much, and the KDE printer manager uses the CUPS thing, it just seemed there was tons on links to the same thing and none of them where what I needed using the site, but I checked the site and my printer shows up there, no error messages on there, I hit print test page and nothing popped up, although when I check the print jobs it says all of the tests and pages I've printed to check, and it said they were all aborted, and I didn't do it, I'll post log file in a second, it's to big for one post.
edit: One more thing, I clicked restart job in CUPS and I got this error message, Error: client-error-not-possible |
Code:
localhost - - [20/May/2007:08:31:41 -0500] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 1604 |
Code:
HTTP/1.1" 200 112 |
Does that help?

Ok, that was the access log, but what about the error log? Did you see anything suspicious in there?
If the web manager is telling you the jobs were aborted, it's a big clue that something should be showing up in the error log. Also, you don't need to post the whole log, just the parts for your test (check the timestamps), or that look suspicious. |
Ok, sorry about that, I looked in the error log and found this,
I [20/May/2007:09:24:50 -0500] Adding start banner page "none" to job 8. I [20/May/2007:09:24:50 -0500] Adding end banner page "none" to job 8. E [20/May/2007:09:25:20 -0500] get_jobs: resource name '/printers/Advanced Faxing Tool (ksendfax)' no good! |
Ok, great now we are getting somewhere.
Can you post the log of what happened after you set the log level to "debug" and tried again? |
Code:
I [27/May/2007:23:30:27 -0500] Started "/usr/lib/cups/cgi-bin/printers.cgi" (pid=10430) |
Ok, it looks like this is your error:
Code:
D [27/May/2007:23:34:21 -0500] [Job 14] renderer command: gs -q -dNOPAUSE -dPARANOIDSAFER -dBATCH -r600 -sDEVICE=ppmraw -sOutputFile=- - | pnm2ppa -v 722 -B 2 -t 10 -b 150 -l 10 -r 10 -x 160 -y 50 -i - -o - http://pnm2ppa.sourceforge.net/ The problem is the DeskJet722c is a "WinPrinter" that is, driver code normally built in to the hardware has to be done by software, so you need the appropriate software installed to run your printer. It should work once you get the ghostscript filter installed. Good luck! |
thank you for the help, I really appreciate it.
