Primary, Logical or Extended partition?

What are the differences between primary, logical & extended partition?

What happens if i install linux(Ex:Redhat) on one of these partitions?

Thanks,

Not sure about the differences but windoze likes to be installed on primary partitions, ususally the first one, and Linux can be installed on any of the above.

I don't have windoze, but my drive is partitioned like this:

Code:

Device Boot      Start        End      Blocks  Id  System
/dev/hda1  *          1          49      393561  83  Linux
/dev/hda2              50        7198    57424342+  5  Extended
/dev/hda5              50        146      779121  82  Linux swap
/dev/hda6            147        632    3903763+  83  Linux
/dev/hda7            633        1240    4883728+  83  Linux
/dev/hda8            1241        1605    2931831  83  Linux
/dev/hda9            1606        2334    5855661  83  Linux
/dev/hda10          2335        3550    9767488+  83  Linux
/dev/hda11          3551        4766    9767488+  83  Linux
/dev/hda12          4767        7198    19535008+  83  Linux

The first one is /boot. Some of that was done by Mandrake, some of the rest was done by me installing Gentoo.

Linux is not to picky. It is windoze that you have to watch how you do the partitions.

Now maybe some other ?guru? will come along with something better. :D

BUMP

Later
