PPP Woes

Not sure if you'd consider this a hardware or software problem, so I'll just put it here. After I installed RedHat 9 on an old Compaq Presario 500mhz POS I configured the modem information (which I think I did correctly, not completely sure as I'm a Linux newbie) and restarted. It starts the usual startup sequence going through all the junk and saying "ok" in green after everything. That is until it says "Bringing up interface PPP0:" in which case it just sits there with a blinking underscore. I left it for like 20 minutes and nothing. Any help to get around this and fix/configure my modem and PPP info would be greatly appreciated. TIA

See, I know absolutely nothing about Linux. So I don't know how to do anything manually.

Alright, it boots fine now, but I still can't get it to "probe" the modem I have installed. I have two, but I don't know if they are Linux compatible. One is a US Robotics AD1807JS chipset and one is a Zoom 2919. Both internal 56k's. Can anyone tell me if these will work with RedHat 9?
