Powering off shuts down but does not power down

Hi, I've got a Peppermint 2 (Ubuntu based) installation on my desktop and a similar installation on my laptop. In both instances, when I shut down Peppermint, the shut down process starts and then my PC (or laptop) just freezes instead of powering off, so I have to manually switch it off. Since my PC is pretty old, I can hear the sound of the hard drive powering off.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Any help on how I can solve this, pls.

Some older computers cannot understand a power off command. I had one that couldn't.

I suggest you test by issuing shutdown now -h from a terminal (you may have to use su or sudo).

I don't think it's an issue with my PC, cos this same old PC has used WinXP, PCLinuxOS, Live CD's of Ubuntu, Puppy, Knoppix and there's never been such an issue. It does however reboot OK.
I then installed PeppermintOS Two on my Compaq CS56 laptop which is pretty powerful and new and same thing - just freezes when I try to shutdown (it does start the shutting down process) infact on my laptop I can't even restart.
Guess I'm having the same issue as a fellow PerrpermintOS Two user: http://peppermintos.net/viewtopic.ph...=3923&start=10

Well, that does quite convincingly knock my theory into a loop. Thanks for filling me in.

No, Frank, you're probably right on the money. There are several different ways that the operating system might have to use to issue a "turn power off" command. These can be configured in the kernel. If your hardware doesn't respond to the attempt, the operating system goes into a HLT loop.

It's also possible, of course, that the computer doesn't quite get that far ... that it's stuck in some final loop waiting (for Godot ...) for the hardware to quiesce. (For example, it sends a shutdown command to all of the disk-drives and waits for confirmation.)

All I can add is that I did have the same problem because of the e1000e ethernet driver. However, I don't think that this is likely, because you have two different computers with the same problem.

Try a live CD or a different distro and see if it helps. If it does, then it may be something distro-specific.
