Cool, glad it was brought up, cause I have a question now (after a quick search or 2);
*straps on super newb suit*
Why would one run anything other than the kernel.org kernel? I see the "patches" that are included in -lq4 but I am still not sure what that means? I was under the impression that a standard vanilla 2.4.19 kernel came with ReiserFS support, so I don't know what that patch is, nor do I know what the security patches are.
Also, if I download and build using the lq kernel, does it add "extra" buttons on my make xconfig screen from the patches or what?
*takes off super newb suit*
Thanks for any links or whatever to answers.
Cool

MasterC,
The stock kernel does include Reiser, but -lq gives you the latest patches. Grsecurity will give you a new section in config/xconfig. Basically a stock kernel *should* include rock solid code that has been tested AND excepted by the kernel maintainer (be it Linus or Marcello). If you want the latest/greatest or things that are not in the kernel for other reasons (such as licensing) you will need to add patches.

Ok before i post my mem stats, i know this may seem like a stupid question but it would come in mighty handy! when i do run free & uname -a and i get the appropriate output. How do i copy that output text from the console? ctrl+c doesnt work
I get rather annoyed with having to rewrite it all :P
so is there a copy method or do i pipe it all off to a text file?

Highlight the text from the console with your mouse, then go back to your browser without highlighting anything else, and click with the middle button into the text field. Put the {code}...{/code} (in [ brackets) around it so that when you click 'submit reply' it is nicely formatted.
