possibly not the same resolution issue

Ive been messing with an earlier mandrake ver on a variety of machines and vid pIII 600 @ 7** 256mb and tnt2 m64(or p166 32mb s3virge GX) no problem installing, changing res, colour depth or virtual desktop etc. However many apps have a problem displaying toolbar buttons- up- back- open etc..
what gives ... any ideas?
