Possible to change the file format..?

Hello everyone.

I have a question about trying to change a file format to a more readable format.

Basically, I have a firewall log that is stored on a Windows 2000 computer. What I was trying to do is copy over the log files, then run a Perl script to extract the data I want from the file.

However, I have a little bit of a problem. The firewall log has the extension of .wgl which is default for the company who makes the firewall.

Putting the firewall log onto my linux server and running the FILE command gives this back:

[simba@backupstorage]$ file 192.168.1.1-2003-03-17-12-28-30.wgl
192.168.1.1-2003-03-17-12-28-30.wgl: data

It is a data file, and I cannot view it with a text editor of sort.

What I want to know is, how can I convert that file to a more readable format that I can run a Perl script against?

Is this possible, or will I have to do something else?

Thanks.

Its possible *IF* you have the specs of the data file. If you know what the format is, you can manipulate it.

Hmm, so basically, I will most likely need to contact the company who makes the Firewall and see If I can find any information from them?

That sound about right.

This may be ugly frustrating.

Yup. That's basically it. Or google around a bit to see if the specs are posted online.

You tried loading it in a text viewer anyway (in windows?), or a hex editor? Shouldn't a firewall log be rather text based?
