port forwarding and encryption

I would like to find out if this is possible. Can I access my home linux box from work running apache web server with 'ProxyRequest on' and tunnel the 'http://' request through ssh. i.e. configure my web browsers proxy settings to point at my home linux box and access the web securely.

Also, if this is possible ? Does this mean that my web access can not be monitered at work by any one else.

let's say my home linux box is 'linux1'

I have forwarded the vnc port with ssh (mindterm) client and it seems to have been working ok.

5901:linux1:5901

local port 5901 forwarded to host 'linux1':5901.

Thanks for help.

That's how I have been doing it.

You actually open the local port in vnc

localhost:5901

so all data is tunneled through ssh.

I don't think anyone can decode it as long as you don't let them get your key

the safest way is to make a key, and don't download it over an insecure connection.

However if they are sneeky enough to be watching your screen with a progam like timbucktoo they can see what your doing

The only thing is I'm not sure what apache has to do with it.

I use sshd. If your not running an ssh client at work then I don't think it's very secure.

Daivd thanks for replying. I finally got some answers by playing around with it. What I was talking about was that if you run Apache web server with proxy turned (ProxyRequest on) on. Then, you can forward something like "9000:localhost:80" on your ssh client. And set your browsers proxy setting to "localhost" for server address and port "80" for port. Your are now surfing securely and web hits are done from your home box.

Thanks again.

Ok,

That sounds like a good deal.

I guess it would be smother than opening the browser on the vnc server on the client desktop. That's the way I have done it.
