POP port 110 question! 30 seconds to access!!! HELP!!!

Hi,

Maybe somebody can help me. I hope this is the correct forum!

My provider has two Linux servers, one RedHat and one Mandrake. I have email accounts on each of them.
For some strange reason, on the Mandrake server, email validation takes 30" everytime, while on the other
validation is immediate. I tried telneting port 110 and on the Redhat, server reply is immediate, while on
mandrake, when telneting, server response takes 30 seconds.

The provider insists that "nothing is wrong" and nobody else has complanied, and that I am plain stupid. But it is driving us crazy!

Telnetting other ports, e.g. port 25 takes 5-7 seconds to answer and port 21 answers immediately.

What can be wrong with the configuration of this server versus the other one???

Help!!!!!!

I once had exactly the same problem - a 30 second response time on Port 110 for downloading POP3 email. I never fixed it (learned to just live with it...!) but I seem to remember that some ppl in here mentioned that it has to do with your name resolution setup - the 30 second delay is because of something wrong with that.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but you might start by taking a look at /etc/resolv.conf and checking that your service provider's DNS server addresses are correctly setup.

Regards,

yeah, you're (rylan76) referring to reverse DNS lookups...

i've seen those cause delays on SSH connections when the DNS servers weren't properly listed in /etc/resolv.conf on the server...

there's likely something similar that happens to mail servers...

it's definitely something worth looking into, at least...
