Poor performance from [IDE/PCI?]

Hello,

The box in question is running Slackware 10.2 with a configured 2.6.14 kernel.
My physical network connection is not the issue, as other computers on the network have no problems, and I've tried different cat5.

Hardware:
Code:
Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82562EZ 10/100 Ethernet Controller (rev 01)
00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) Ultra ATA 100 Storage Controller (rev 02)
00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corp. 82801EB (ICH5) Serial ATA 150 Storage Controller (rev 02)
dmesg output:

When attempting to copy files over the LAN through ncftpput (this applies to all protocols, however) my system is under heavy stress (my CPU isn't, but my network activity and disk access seem to flutter between 80-100 and 70-80, respectively) to the point that it's almost not usable. This leads me to believe that it may be something to do with my PCI/IDE settings or driver. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Secondly, when I'm burning a CD the same type of system hanging occurs again, which leads me to believe it's most certainly something with one of the two, or both. Can anyone give any insight to this?

One last thing, I can run -tT to test the drive, but when I try to grab information I receive the following:
Code:
/dev/sda:
HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Thanks for your help ahead of time.
