Pls tell me which version is correct for Quad core processor

with reference of my previous post "http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-general-1/can-i-install-red-hat-9-on-quad-core-processor-645767/", I want to ask next question. I just purchased new quad core processor & vendor tried to install Linux (Fedora version) on it but he didn't succeed. he has not told me the version. Please let me know which version should I take so that I can properly install it on my new machine.

waiting for your precious replies.
Thanks in advance again.

Any x86 or amd64 compatible distro will work (that's virtually 100% of them). There's nothing special on a quad core.

If you mean that you want a distro that is compiled specifically for that cpu, I don't know of any distro that's optimized for that since most distros aims to be as generic as possible, but Gentoo can be configured and recompiled with a simple command to fit the exact architecture of your cpu if that's what you want.

Gentoo ask from you some effort though. It's not a click & install distro.

  1. I would just like you to note that quoting links in this way (literally, without using the "insert link" button) makes it harder for people reading your post to follow up the link. In fact, as far as I can tell, using Akregator, it makes it impossible, unless you also employ an external browser (OK, this is not a great pain, but you are making it more difficult for people to follow).
  2. Really, most of this question was dealt with in the previous thread. The new element is that you have now had a vendor try to install some version of Fedora and that hasn't worked.
All I can really say about this is that:
    • all recent versions of Fedora are theoretically capable of running on multi-core cpus and should work
    • even ancient versions of fedora from ~5 years ago ought to install and run, albeit needing an alternative kernel before they take advantage of all of the cores (but this should not apply because you should not be installing a version that old)
    • Unless you can include some details of which version and what the exact error messages were it is unlikely that anyone will know what to do to help you
    • It is difficult to know at this remove whether the problem is caused by the vendor's lack of experience with Linux or not. Presumably, he claims to have experience with Linux? I guess that we can only ask whether you believe him.
