Sorry, we won't do your homework for you. What I can recommend is googling.
You should easily find the answers for most of those questions.

You are welcome.

Reading just about any linux beginners guide will answer all those questions in the first chapter. It will have the added benefit of teaching you something. :)

abcool92 -- if I may inquire, what book did you purchase? I am really surprised that many of these questions (their answers, actually) are not adequately explained in it. I would not recommend this book, by the looks of things.

Thank you,
Sasha

Even so, the pieces of advice you've received so far are still the best you can get if you just 'copy&paste' your questions from some book.

Regardless of the issue whether it is a homework assignment of not (and it does LOOK like a typical assignment), finding answers for yourself will be much more beneficial for you.

I'd also very much like to know which book you are referring to. It must be really, really bad.

help!

Is this true???
The field separator for the cut utility can be defined to be any character by using the -d option.???

thanks!

damgar 03-27-2010 09:43 PM

I think from other threads started by the OP we can go ahead and assume that these were in fact homework questions.

GrapefruiTgirl 03-27-2010 09:56 PM

If you read the man page for `cut` you can see the usage of not only the -d option, but other options that can be used with `cut`. Please note also (in case you do not at this time have access to a Linux machine) that the man page for virtually any Linux tool or command can be located easily with a quick internet search.

It appears that you're posting from a Windows machine. Have you used Linux at all yet? I will suggest that for your own education, grabbing a LiveCD of a popular Linux distribution and checking it out, will benefit you much more than the answers you might receive by asking such readily self-answerable questions of forum members. A more appropriate question would be in the case that you are trying to USE the `cut` tool for something, and it is not working -- then we might be better able, and more inclined, to help.

I've asked that this thread be merged with your other thread over there: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=798328 since it is of the same style, and pretty much invites the same sort of advice as you received over there: This question is VERY easily answered without the need for creating a thread about it.

I also suggest you read this page: http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/...xQuestions_org
where you will read about such things as "GOOD vs BAD thread titles" and other very handy things to know when trying to get the best usage of a forum such as LQ.

By the way, you never did tell me what Linux beginners book you are working from or reading. I would very much like to know.

Kind regards,
Sasha
