Playing Videos in Linux

I am finding more and more that my SLackware 9 running Gnome has all that I want and need, except playing movie files from the internet. I was just at the TechTV site, and can't play the videos which go along with the stories. I prefer Mozilla, but will switch if need be to watch the videos.

What are the Linux options for playing internet videos? Most of the stuff I am finding is over two years old! That can't be all there is.

Thanks. Sean.

get mplayer or xine, there are plugins for both, and i think xine might automatically add it's entry to mozilla's helper app list.

oops, not sure mplayer has one. No prob, you can add an entry to mozilla's helper application list. It's in the preferences, very simple.

Yes there is a Mplayer plugin RPM for Red Hat , and I believe there is the source and you can compile for Slack:

I found both xine and mplayer. mplayer has been downloaded but was a failure for installing. I must have done something wrong, but the readme really sucks (I need the help).

xine has listed the distros and what you need for each, but Slackware isn't on there. Does that mean I'll need the source and compile for Slack as JayCnrs said I needed for mplayer?

I got mplayer from the Slackware repository. It was a .tgz file, so I gzip -d to a tar, then tar -xvf and it unpacked well enough. I have the install and usr folders in my tmp folder. But I can't seem to run
./configure
make
make install

What may I be doing wrong there?

Thanks. Sean.

there's a guy called yowwww with a newbie mplayer install guide he wrote in his sig, might want to have a look at that.

as for viewing files online... install mplayer and also http://mplayerplug-in.sf.net to showe them embedded.

as for what you were doing.. you gave no useful information so we couldn't say....
