pivot_root: Invalid argument -- trying to boot my own Gentoo LiveCD

Hi!

Im in the process of building a Gentoo LiveCD. Most guides I've found thus far date back to the 2004 era and so I've had to do a lot of improvising. So far, I can boot into my initramfs, mount my file systems, but one of the final steps - pivot_root - fails.

The exact error is pivot_root: Invalid argument

During the boot process, I mount the CD's root partition on /new

Within /new is a directory newroot (/new/newroot)

The pivot command (run from /new) is as follows:
pivot_root . newroot

Im not entirely familiar with the command, though I've read the man pages and spent a long while on Google to no avail. Some posters have said though, that pivot_root should be avoided as it is the "old way of doing things" and may not be very secure.

I'd appreciate any help!

Thanks,
