pipe screen to video device (udev)

Is there any way to pipe video from the screen to a video device that can be used as if it came from a webcam? I assume it uses udev somehow...

Hi welcome to LinuxQuestions! , Do you want to save the video of a webcam video, you can use screen video capture program like "xvidcap"
* you can capture a particular portion of the video
* you can pause, resume while capturing the video

Thank you for the answer, but that's not what I meant. I intend to redirect my desktop to a device file that can act like a webcam.

Alternatively, a way to edit the video that is output by /dev/video would satisfy my ultimate goal but take longer.

I'm confused. A webcam is an input device; a display is an output device.

How you gonna get an output device to act like an input device?

I think the OP wants to simulate the situation like: as if the stuff he sees on his desktop (screen) is actually coming from a (web)camera. I.e. the video card is the source (the camera) and this mysterious 'device' is something like an editing machine or whatever. Kinda like using `recordmydesktop` and piping the output to some external device?

Maybe not though, and some further clarification (including the goal of this project) might help, if this is not the right idea.

udev, webcam
