Yip, sounds like a firewall problem. If you are not up to editing the rules manually, take a look at the excellent GUI called guarddog which makes it a breeze to sort out these problems.
However, I would warn you to do a bit of reading about linux firewalling as you don't want to leave your machine vunerable whilst online.
