ping fail from local lan to IPCop
 

Hi,

I'm testing IPCop 1.4.x.x. in the network configuration, I chose: Green + Red(Modem/ISDN). I give my green interface the ip: 192.168.0.1. I put one XP pc on the same lan as the Ipcop and I try to ping the ipcop from that XP pc, and it failed. but the strange thing is that I can ping from the ipcop pc to the xp pc but not vice versa.

From the XP pc, i can access the IPCop configuration page by using this url:192.168.0.1:81. but I wonder why i can't ping the Ipcop pc from the XP pc.

so what is the problem?

my ipcop pc is the default installation. I have not change any setting yet except the IP address.

Check the IPcop settings in the Web interface for ICMP. You can turn off the ping options there. Other then that do you have any firewall software on the xp machine?

on the firewall page, I chose the first option which doesn't disable ping response. no firewall is installed on my XP pc as well.

so what is the problem?

The only other things I can think of is either.

A.) The Virutal NIC settings on the WinXP box.

or

B.) You don't have the 2 systems in a Virutal Team depending on which version of VM you are running.


This is how I setup mine.


My VM IpCop Box's first nic was setup as a bridge so it would grab a seperate outside IP address for the RED network. Then the 2nd Virutal Nic I setup as Hosts only for my GREEN network. Then on the winXp system I setup the NIC settings as a hosts only NIC. Then I grouped the two together in a VMware team. When you do this it lets you setup your Lan connecitons like if you where plugging them into a switch. Create 1 LAN connection between the 2 hosts only NICS and your set.

Now try messing around with the virutal nic settings i'm sure that is probably where your problem is as if you setup your Xp box with a bridge NIC or a NAT nic it will be on a diffrent network then your firewall/IPbox which could cause the problem.
