php problem

Im having a problem with php on an apache server. When I try to open a php file with any web browser

e.g www.mysite.com/index.php

The web browser will ask If I want to save the file. Im guessing that there is a problem between apache and php but there was nothing that stood out in the httpd.config

If its any use I can access the file by using telnet

[root@localhost root]# telnet localhost 80
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1).
Escape character is '^]'.
GET /index.php
INDEX.PHP CONTENT......
etc etc....
Connection closed by foreign host.

The server is running Red Hat Linux 9 and xammp 1.4.9a

php version: PHP 4.3.9 (cli)
apache version: Apache/2.0.52

Make sure you have a LoadModule line for PHP in your config files (on my system it's split out to modules.conf instead of httpd.conf, but it might be different for you).
The line on my system is:
Code:
LoadModule php4_module /usr/lib/apache/1.3/libphp4.so
