I have installed from the source file at php.net the current version of PHP. However it doesnt update what is running on my server and I am having the mysql_connect error.
Did you remember to restart Apache after installing the new PHP (I am assuming you have PHP installed as an Apache module, not a CGI binary)? Failing that, what's the exact error message you are getting -- it will help us debug the problem.
Did you remember to compile php with mysql support? What does your php.ini file look like? More details will help in this situation and possibly the exact error message with code its referring to that is giving the error.
