permissions


how can i set permissions on perticular user like in solaris using "setfacl" . this command is in linux but cant works, if any one knows how to use it.
and i also wanna know about chmod permissions first bit "3114" what's for "3"
what is "suid" "guid" in permissions

The first 3 is both 'sticky bit' and suid bit.

You want to read the info pages for core utils:
File: coreutils.info, Node: Changing Special Permissions

Also from:
File: coreutils.info, Node: Mode Structure
In addition to the permissions listed above, there may be file
attributes specific to the filesystem, e.g: access control lists
(ACLs), whether a file is compressed, whether a file can be modified
(immutability), whether a file can be dumped. These are usually set
using programs specific to the filesystem.

There is a program to examine file attributes of ext2 file systems, lsattr. chattr will change them.

For a good guide on permissions etc, check out The Rute User's Tutorial - google for it, it's also on some people's sigs here (MasterC or someone..)
