Permission denied when trying to write to ttyS0

I'm nearing wits end. I run a bunch of X-10 stuff on my ttyS0 port. Recently, I've been getting:

error (Permission denied) opening /dev/tts/0

I looked at permissions and both owner and group are uucp.

I do - chmod 777 0; chgrp users 0 (checking again, owner-uucp and group=users) I can write to it once, then the permissions revert back to both owner and group being uucp.

I'm not sure what I started or ran or did to make this happen. I kind of need it to make my house look "lived in" while I'm otherwise involved.

I've to no avail.

I await an anointing.

Thanks
Paul
