Permission denied

Hi, I am very new to all this Linux stuff and have what is most likly a silly proplem IE. I have made a makefile for a small program but when I try to use it with the make command I get :-

[tony@localhost assignment3]$ makefile
bash: ./makefile: Permission denied

I have all the files in the current working folder assignment3 ?

How do I get it to work?

Are you sure the permissions and ownerships are correct and your user account has proper access? Is there any other details on this makefile and program your speaking about that we should know to better help you?

Try just running 'make' rather than 'makefile'

Have you applied execute permissions to the file ?

if you do

ls -l
this will tell what permissions the file has.

if you get

makefile -rw-rw-r--

if the x or execute bit is not set then you can't run it as a program

try doing

chmod a+x makefile
