:Pengy: Linux and/or BSD variant on an old mac?
I just received a Macintosh LC III back from my aunt who was borrowing it from my family. I would really like to set it up as a dedicated linux/bsd box, but I don't know if a) it's compatible, or b) which distro I should use.
Macintosh LC III specs: processor: 68030 with 32 bit data bus speed: 25 megahertz! (woohoo!) memory: 4MB of RAM storage: floppy disk drive, 40-160MB hard disk (let's go with 40 as a worst-case-scenario), external CD-ROM drive I might have some more information if you need it. I just started with Linux this summer, and I've only ever used Slackware, but I am a quick learner and I'm happy to try another distro. I guess the real question is, is it possible to run linux/bsd on this computer? If it is, which distribution should I use? How would I go about installing linux? Thank you very much for your time, Cam |
I still got a Powerbook 180 (that's a 68030) waiting for the 68K Liberation Front to conquer, and since I guess this will be an incursion into FPU-less territory and m86k-linux hasn't taken off like PPC had, I'm opting for NetBSD. Maybe you should have a look at "The 68k Mac Liberation Army Forums" http://www.literatureclassics.com/68kmla/default.asp as well...
