Pc turns off randomly?!?!!?!

Hi, today i was playing a game of cs in windoze then my pc turned off randomly, my router was still going nuts lyk its pinging and my pc wouldnt turn back on, so i turned off at the wall and it started i went into linux to test this out, a few mins later it jsut randomly shutdown again wouldnt start up and had to be turned off at wall and on again, it only started today and i dont have hybernat on or anything, help please.

By turned off, do you mean absolutely no power or what?
If so, why would you "turn it off at the wall?" Would it not
restart by pressing the power button? Is this a laptop or a
PC? Could it be the CPU overheating and shutting it down?

Nz_Boy_2004 01-14-2005 06:13 PM

Its just shutdowning down as in power turns off but not the screen and stuff its a normal pc and u can turn it on via the button but the screen stays blank and the only way to make the screen and thing work is to trun it off at the wall, how do you test cpu heat??

Bruce Hill 01-14-2005 06:16 PM

I don't know about the monitor not turning off. To test the cpu heat you
can probably go into your BIOS and find a hardware monitor, which IMO
is the most accurate data. Otherwise, you can use something like a meter
provided through GkrellM on an ongoing basis. There are others, and if
no one replies, run a Google search on LQ for them.

Nz_Boy_2004 01-14-2005 07:54 PM

Its done it 4 times while playing counter strike source, 2 times running virus can and once when i booted into linux.

Bruce Hill 01-14-2005 08:02 PM

Could very well be a worm or virus if it only happens in Windoze,
but if doing it while booting Linux, I would suspect hardware.

Which boot loader are you using?
Do you see any error message, or does it just reboot?
Which anti-virus program do you have?
Have you been able to successfully run a virus scan since this started?
Were you able to check your CPU temperature?
If that is the problem, it should run fine if you leave it shut off for about
an hour, and shouldn't shutdown too soon.
Is your CPU fan running?

If you're don't have experience working with computer hardware,
you'd be better off returning to the place where your bought the
computer, or to a reputable service center. We have many guys
from NZ on LQ who could probably recommend a local shop.

I don't know what ABS II might be, but if I'm reading that
correctly, it says that ABS will shutdown your system when
the ABS II Temp reaches 85C, and when you generated
that it was at 83C. It only needed to rise 2 degrees at that
point to shut it down - which is probably what happened.

This is what one of my comps with an Athlon XP 2500+ reads:

MB Temperature 23C/73F
CPU Temperature 32C/89.5F
CPU Fan Speed 5000RPM

VCORE Voltage 1.57V
+3.3V Voltage 3.31V
+5V Voltage 4.89V
+12V Voltage 12.35V

That ABS II Temp 83C/177F is a red flag.

You really need a manual or someone who is familiar with
ABS to interpret that information. If that ABS II Temp of
83C/177F is your CPU, it's about to fry. See this LQ thread
for a little more wisdom.

Do you have 2 CPUs or is the fan just on the #2 switch?

You most definitely need some attention to that CPU...

WOAH. It looks like your processor is running WAY TO HOTT! Don't turn your computer on anymore, because you might cook it despite the auto-poweroff that your motherboard seems to be affording you, albeit it is a bit buggy.

Take it into a computer shop and tell them that you suspect your CPU fan is broken, or your CPU heatsink has become disloged.

Nz_Boy_2004 01-14-2005 11:22 PM

Toke the heatsink off and fan washed all the dust out of it and now my cpu is 33C and only 61C ABS II so has to raise a whole 24C to get to the point of shutdown, if i have this problem in future ill take ur advise Travers and take it into the computer shop for now its fine, amd should supply a copper heatsink with the processer i rekon instead i got a cheap ally 1(my fathers a engineer and electric dude so when he came round and had a look told me about how coppers a better heat conductor or sumthing also looked up new heatsinks and fans the 1s that are lyk 40-50buck and more are copper coils so yer).

Bruce Hill 01-15-2005 01:41 AM

Also get some of that artic silver or at least some new heatsink compound
and put between your CPU and heatsink. If you pulled the heatsink off the
CPU (you bout had to to remove the heatsink) then you broke the seal they
had, and you're still running too hot - since from your voltage I don't think
you're overclocking.

What CPU are you running?

Nz_Boy_2004 01-15-2005 02:27 AM

yes the seal broke and the cpu goes upto 43C before stoping and stays around 61C abs II, AMD xp 2000+.

Bruce Hill 01-15-2005 02:48 AM

Don't burn that puppy up! Get some thermal compound...

Nz_Boy_2004 01-15-2005 03:18 PM

My mistake cpu 48C, my father has diode compand and he rekons its the same stuff because hes some eletric dude etc.

Travers 01-15-2005 10:40 PM

Anything that is sticky and will conduct heat will do---in a jam. Get some thermal paste. =)
