Pc turning itself off (fan trouble i think)

Hey guys

I am proud -übern00b- that's trying to run Ubuntu Breezy Badger 5.10

These are my spec's :

Dell Inspiron 5150
Nvidia FX 5200 GO
512 mb RAM
Pentium 3.0 GhZ
60 gb hdd

And this is my problem :

I'm having my quality time with gnome, sitting there for 30 min. i've added some repositories and installed 2-3 programs..suddenly my pc takes a "deep breath" and turns itself off, it NEVER does that in Winblows, so, have any of you any clue on what the problem is? I don't run much programs or anything.....but when i restart it, the PC tells me that it was a fan problem...Could this have anything to do with the fact that gnome is more laggy than my Windows XP? Is it like this it has to be?

I thank you for your help....

-Leth

-May the force be with you-

Time to open up the box and have a good look around in there with a flashlight. Look for fans that aren't spinning or are spinning very very slowly. Look for any wires that may be in the fan blades. Moving computers around can sometimes shift things if they aren't well enough tied down.

Your BIOS may have a Health screen that can give you a hint of what to look for. Look for higher than normal temperatures or lower than normal fan RPM's.

Also look at the power supply fan and make sure it's still working properly.

EDIT: Oh ya! Look for large accumulations of dust in heat sinks & fans and also in the power supply. You can use an air compressor or vacuum cleaner set to blow air or even just a paint brush to loosen the dust and your mouth to blow the dust out.

Vacuum or blow all the loose dust out of the case after getting it out of the heat sinks/fans. Be a bit careful not to let the vacuum touch the mainboard. I'd be a little concerned about static electricity if it does.
