password protecting a desktop

I don't suppose it's possible to password-protect a desktop, on any desktop software (I have none in particular in mind)?

Do you mean independently password protecting each virtual desktop in your logon session desktop environment? If so, I haven't ever come across a way to do that. But you can easily create multiple users with unique passwords, and log them all on to different tty terminals. You can lock each one independently, and switch between them using CTRL+ALT+Fn.
