Password prompt takes 20 seconds to display after login
Hi all,
I just set up a brand new FTP server using vsftpd on Fedora Core 6. (zod)
However, when I login remotely (ssh or ftp) it takes about 20 seconds from the login prompt, for the password prompt to appear.
Once connected the speed is fine, I can upload and download files as fast as if the pc was next to me in the office.
Does anyone know what might be causing this huge delay before I'm prompted for a password (except high network traffic, I've tested this with other machines)
Thanks in advance!
Alex

Hi
I was having a similar problem under Debian Sarge, although it only affected SSH. When logging in, it prompted for the username almost instantly, but there was a 10 second delay before asking for the passsword. I came across this http://lists.netisland.net/archives/.../msg00165.html, and doing as it suggests (ie. adding the box I was connecting from to /etc/hosts) resulted in no delay.
Not sure if that's the problem here, but that might be a place to start.

Fixed! - explanation below
Thanks, I can see how that makes perfect sense, I actually fixed it by putting a dns server address in /etc/resolv.conf. ( I didn't have one originally because I didn't think I'd need DNS for anything as it's only accessed from the outside for FTP.

Usually this is a DNS issue, reverse DNS issue that is. Setting up proper DNS or adding the hosts in /etc/hosts will fix this problem.

How does one go about ensuring that the proper DNS directions are set up on a machine, so that this SSH thing will not wait to time out? I have this same problem. I mean the format of entries in /etc/hosts
Thanks.

/etc/hosts format is as follows:
Code:
IPAddress hostname.domainname hostname
