Passwd command appears to work......but still can't log in.

I have a server running Red Hat ES 4 (which we are compelled to use). I went to log in with my usual account, but the password was not accepted. The account was not locked out, nor had the password expired. Ok, no big deal, I'll just log in as root and change it. So I logged in as root, used the passwd command to set the password, and it appeared to work just fine, just like I've done a million times before. However, it STILL will not accept the password. I've tried using completely different passwords, deleting the password and resetting it, forcing a password change, everything short of deleting the entire account and recreating it. I've never seen this behaviour before. It seems like it would be such a simple thing, but I'm not seeing it. Any ideas?
