partitioning a large HDD

I know there are a lot of post about partitioning and some guides but most of them are quite old. I've removed win from my 120GB HDD and placed it on the old 40GB disk. This leaves the big one for use of linux. I'd like to setup two distro's (deb and slack) but am kinda lost with the partitions. I never had this much space so how to set it up? Any clues or pointers from anyone using a large drive?

Regards
