when you install linux the majority of distro's do all the partitioning for you. which version you going to be installing.

i think win XP has a partitioner built in

Yuu could use parted, a linux tool available e.g. on the knoppix distribution - as long as you don't want to resize NTFS partitions (will work with FAT and FAT32, see http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/parted.html ).

I'm not pretty sure if there is a reliable freeware alternative for NTFS partitions either on Windows or on Linux.

Every distribution comes with a hard drive partitioner as part of the install program. Once you get Linux installed there are at least two Linux hard drive partitioning programs, fdisk and parted.

I think JMcatch742 is looking for a non-destructive NTSC partition resizing program.

I believe that the Mandrake install program may resize an NTSC partition with code licensed from the company that produces Partition Magic. Select the manual option for the partitioning section and resize the partition there. Back up the XP information just in case however.

I think Jmcatch742 is in search of a tool for resize his XP partition without data loss, so I would not recommend fdisk or any other distribution-built-in-partitioners as they all will erase data.

As stated above parted can do resizing without data loss (a full backup of your data is still highly recommended) on FAT partitions.
