Partition not recognized after fdisk -- must reboot?

Is there a way to get around the reboot after creating a partition using FDisk and then running /sbin/mkfs /dev/blah? Just curious...

I'm not aware of any time when you MUST reboot for most systems.

I wasn't either before. I am using RHEL4 so I'm not sure if this might have anything to do with it though I really don't see why this would be.

Well, how do you believe it is "forcing" you to reboot your system at that point? Exactly what steps do you go through?
