partition and format unpartitioned hard disk which lies on an external usb case

Hi,

I want to partition and format a new hard disk which lies on a usb external case. As you can imagine it is raw format with no partitions at all. Can you please give me some directions.... on how to find the device that I need to run fdisk on... There are no clues on /var/messages... My system is a Fedora Core 3 running kernel 2.6.10-1.770_FC3

Cheers.
