I'm moving my wife's machine (finally) over to linux and was wondering what program can I use to allow her to move her email over from outlook express to linux.
I'm told open office works but my problem is outlook express does not export mail.. so I can copy it from the HD but not export it.
Is there anyting that can read that format or will I have to install vmware for her to be able to access it?
Outlook Express will only export mail, contacts, etc...to Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Exchange. Even if you were able to copy the .ost or .pst file from her profile I am not certain if any Linux mail app will support those type of file extensions. If her email is just the regular HTTP mail service (hotmail, yahoo,...) the internet mail should just download into the appropiate box using Netscape. Vmware supports Outlook? I knew of a few apps it supports but I didn't know outlook would work.
but my problem is outlook express does not export mail..
Some nfo here
Just the steps up to where you get the *.mbx files which can be read by most MUA's that can handle files. Spose the mentioned phrase "Netscape compatible mail file" should mean the same.
if you want the same sort of functionality in linux that you get with outlook, you may have to delete some essential system files and libraries, to simulate the virus trap syndrome that outlook has, and also remember to fill up your drive with huge files that contain nothing but undecipherable drivel!
actually, i hear that evolution is best, go with what these folks have already said, i'm sure they know best.
I mean there is a program called "out2unix" that you run on your windows machine and it will then get, and convert all the messages for you, and you can them import them 2 linux. I use sylpheed myself, and its very similiar outlook express, except that it can't show html messages, otherwise evolution is very similiar (and better) than outlook with address, calendar etc...
I installed RH 7.3 on my test machine and found Evolution shows it can open outlook express 4 mail files so I'm going to see if that works.. I'll re-post after I get the results.
I DID IT!!!! this is kind of my first problem I solved ALL by myslef!!!!!
Anyway, what I did was simple. I installed MS outlook, then I exported the mails from Outlook Express to Outlook and then using out2unix I converted them to a unix format... After taht I transfered them to the linux machine and with the evolution importation tool I imported them!!!!

Otherwise you can install mozilla on windows. The mozilla mail client can import from outlook (express?), and save it in unix mbox format. You can then import to most mailprograms in linux.
I was going to reply, til I saw the date. I was able to simply bring the directory from OE over to my ~/mail directory and kmail instantly read it. No import/export, simply cp.
Kmail-1.5 has an Import from Lookout Express I've just noticed.....not something that I'm ever likely to use :-)
Go to Tools-->Import and Import from OE5 is the first option, OE$ is in the list along with a few others.
